Remembered as an autobiographical movie by the showman Raj Kapoor, Mera Naam Joker flopped big time when it was first released. The movie was way ahead of its time and that was the reason why viewers couldn’t understand the vision of the legendary director at that time. As expected, years later it was widely accepted as a masterpiece of Indian Cinema.
With an unusual duration of more than 3 hours the movie is a sensitive portrayal of three important phases of our lives, childhood (adolescence), youth and the final lonely years. Showing his deep understanding of the medium, Raj Kapoor tries to explain the untold reasons to why we all fall in love again & again in life as we progress and make more acquaintances. Why we knowingly keep on committing the same mistake in love and why trust is the most important emotion in a lovers life.
However the best part of the movie remains the one which talks about the age of adolescence. Raj Kapoor beautifully explains the infatuations we all tend to have in that tender age. Young Rishi Kapoor dreaming about his teacher in the school has been captured brilliantly on the screen in a very mystic and suggestive manner. The immensely talented director conceives the dream sequence with the exact bizarre visuals as thought by a young boy at the age of 14.
The next two parts have more gimmicks added to them, which somehow takes away the essence of the plot. But still, Mera Naam Joker is a pure example of progressive cinema in those golden years attempted by one of most talented and successful directors of Indian Cinema, Raj Kapoor. If you are a person who loves to think from his heart then this is a movie about yourself.
