Se7en (1995) (Movies To See Before You Die - Suspense)

Seven, is a sharp and cruel murder mystery revolving around two homicide detectives, in search of a serial killer who is making some brutal murders after selecting his victims as per the seven deadly sins. The film is one of most famous crime mystery movies, which is likely to be found in all the ‘Must See Movies” Lists made around the world, giving it a cult status. Though it’s indeed a well made movie based on a brilliant script having three immensely talented people on the screen, at their best. But still, my reasons for including it in the ‘Not To Be Missed” list might come out to be slightly different from many.

First of all I would like to admit, that for me the suspense part of the movie wasn’t that engrossing since it didn’t involve too much of investigations or guess work to be done on the viewer’s part. Besides I was also expecting more explanatory scenes of the serial killer defining his inner trauma and specific reasons of committing such heinous crimes. Yet, I really appreciated the dark and artistic tone of the movie showcasing the lethal tortures of the victims and their justification done with the seven sins in a unique style. In fact I strongly feel that may be SE7EN (1995) was the movie, which actually gave the makers of “SAW” (2004) the basic idea of coming up with a script written around some innovative murderous tortures.

The movie is undoubtedly based on a well written script enlightening the viewer about the seven sins of mankind used as a base by the murderer for his serial killings. But for me the few reasons why you should much watch Se7en include its polished thoughtful Direction, superbly crafted Cinematography, one of their career best performances from the lead cast and a well executed climax which leaves you just stunned and thinking after its final shock. The best act comes from Morgan Freeman, the senior detective, whom I truly love in his intense form, delivering a cool, veteran like of performance, as expected. Kevin Spacey as the serial killer once again shows his immense range followed by Brad Pitt who successfully moves out of his famous glossy image to impress.

Admittedly, for some, Se7en may be too dark, grim and even depressing, with a slightly dropping pace in the middle. But if you love the genre of crime, suspense and mystery movies with a small pinch of horror, then you would surely enjoy watching this well directed film of David Fincher, especially for its out of the box, thought-provoking final moments.

Bavani

Hello Bobby,
What a co-incidence! I was thinking of the beauty of the climax only when i saw this a week ago! Only a star writer expresses like this fantastically! :) Beautiful review! Actually the thing is that the problem with negativity is not that it destroys the good but it brings out the worst in the good persons. Padmashri Kamalhasan must have been inspired from this climax, when he made "Devar Magan" (Virassat is its Hindi counterpart).

Rightly said Bavani and yes Kamal may have been inspired by this as it seems.
Thanks for writing in and Keep In Touch,

Cheers!
