THE FAMILY MAN (Web-Series / Prime) - A true to its title investigative crime thriller, focusing on the witty protagonist juggling between his official duty and family responsibilities. [TTP (To The Point) Review By Bobby Sing)

To be fair, talking about an underpaid intelligence officer and his associates investigating a suspected terrorist operation, THE FAMILY MAN has nothing novel or fresh in terms of a subject or plot. It has a familiar story progression, saying the same old things, yet again mentioning Kashmir, the Islamic terrorism and much of the already seen before in its first few episodes, before it actually moves to Kashmir introducing a new key character.

But in spite of this familiarity, THE FAMILY MAN largely works due to its engaging execution, lead performances and the comical flavor mixing the on-duty operations and family elements, thankfully bringing in the much needed novelty factor. It has been shot well (with quite a few worth noticing sequences), intelligently written and smartly directed by the duo Raj and DK. Plus has some relevant insertions too related with Muslim students and their provocation, though that also slides towards the repetitive Islamophobia.

Moreover, the series mainly becomes a winner due to its lead performer, the effortlessly natural and impressive Manoj Bajpayee along with the talented Sharib Hashmi and a well-chosen supporting cast complimenting them superbly including Dalip Tahil, Priyamani, Gul Panag and more. Focusing on the family, it also presents the character of Manoj’s wife with dignity and respect, deserving appreciation. But on the other hand, has its own share of creative liberties and over-stretching visible in the later episodes, which surely could have been avoided to make it a more taut and crispier series.

In all, it’s actually the intentional light hearted feel and an entertaining comical touch in its writing that keeps you mostly engaged. However THE FAMILY MAN cannot be treated as something completely novel or outstanding that might also require a lot of patience to finish it in a one continuous watch.

Rating : 3.5 / 5
